Hello, my name is Johannes Gysbertus Havenga. My life took an unexpected turn on May 3, 2023, when a motorbike accident forever changed my path. A motorist, failing to check their mirrors or signal, bumped me off my bike. The crash left my right leg shattered in three places.
The incredible team at Groote Schuur Hospital worked tirelessly to repair the damage, installing plates to stabilize the fractures. However, the road to recovery was fraught with complications. A severe bone infection set in, leading to the removal of my femur and its replacement with a temporary cement femur, fused to my lower leg. Despite their efforts, an antibiotic-resistant infection continued to spread.
Doctors exhausted every option, using the most powerful antibiotics available, but the infection persisted. Eventually, the only viable solution was to amputate my leg. On June 25, 2024, my right leg was amputated.
Through this challenging time, I found strength in prayer, and I’m grateful that the bacteria cleared from my bloodstream after months of antibiotics. Once discharged from Groote Schuur, I moved to the Living Hope Care Centre, where I’ve been relearning how to navigate life.
Currently, I use a walking frame to manage short distances, as advised by my physiotherapist, who recommended I build strength and balance for at least 10 months before transitioning to crutches. Every step is a milestone, but the journey remains daunting.
Before my accident, I worked in the film industry, creating special effects—a career I loved deeply. I dream of returning to that world, but being confined to a wheelchair has made everyday life incredibly challenging. Simple tasks like taking a shower, using the toilet, or running errands now require assistance.
A prosthetic leg would be life-changing. It would restore my independence, allowing me to walk again, regain my mobility, and return to being an active, contributing member of society. I’m only 54 years old (turning 55 this December) and believe I have many years ahead to live a full, fruitful life.
If you’d like to support my journey toward getting a prosthetic leg and reclaiming my independence, I’d be deeply grateful. Every donation brings me closer to standing tall once more.
