The OrthoCross Amputee Foundation would be limited in its impact without the support of our incredible sponsors and partners. The individuals, institutions, and companies that back us enable us to broaden our reach, allowing us not only to assist more patients but also to provide the level of care and attention necessary to restore their mobility. Below are our growing list of supporters and a little more on how they help!

The Cape Town Creative Academy (CTCA) is a private university based in Cape Town that encourages the integration of industry projects into its courses, providing students with hands-on experience in real-world situations. One such course is the Makers Lab Elective, led by product designer Philip van der Walt, who is part of a development team working on leg covers for the prosthetic and orthotic industry. His company, The Additive Manufacturing Institute, has been collaborating with Limb Legacy to develop these leg covers. Early in the development process, it was decided that these covers should become a standard component for the foundation’s patients, as the benefits they provide are too significant to overlook. A pilot project was conducted, creating a prototype leg cover that could be worn by a patient at a fundraising golf day. From this, the idea emerged to expand the range of designs by incorporating student designs from the CTCA as part of a Makers Lab project. The students received predeveloped digital templates and were tasked with creating exciting new styles and looks that would offer patients a variety of options to suit their different personalities. These designer covers would ultimately be integrated into a range of final products and offered to foundation patients at no cost.

The contributions made by the CTCA were multifaceted. In addition to the designs, the academy also organized and sponsored the production of a professional video, which the foundation could use to demonstrate the impact of its work. This video has helped raise the foundation’s profile, including an article in the latest issue of Visio Stellenbosch. The increased exposure will help spread awareness of the foundation’s mission and the crucial support it needs to continue its work.

For more information on the project, please watch the video below, follow the link to the CTCA blog where they have written an excellent article, and explore the wonderful designs created by the students.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Cape Town Creative Academy and the Makers Lab students for their contributions and the care they took in providing our patients with the opportunity to choose something beautiful. Their efforts have not only enhanced the lives of our patients but have also made a meaningful difference in their overall well-being.
